San Antonio College students' network for the 2008 election

For the back ground on this issue I have researched many things. According to Alan Greenblatt, The 1952 law also attempted to address — in the era's racist terms — the newly acknowledged reality of Mexican workers who crossed the border illegally. Border Patrol agents were given more power to search for illegal immigrants and a bigger territory in which to operate. Also because of the September 11th act, now the public has to show more identification like social security cards, driver’s licenses and, birth certificates. This has taken effect May 2008. They have made this strict law because they do not want any more terrorist. Also after World War II, Congress decided to codify the scores of immigration laws that had evolved over the years. The landmark Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 retained a basic quota system that favored immigrants from Northern Europe — especially the skilled workers and relatives of U.S. citizens among them. At the same time, it exempted immigrants from the Western Hemisphere from the quota system — except for the black residents of European colonies in the Caribbean.

Obama thinks immigration should be stopped and people should be free. He says; “The American people want fairness and want justice”. He also says; “Deporting so many people is ridiculous”. He makes a speech saying; “When communities are terrorized by ICE immigration raids, when nursing mothers are torn from their babies, when children come home from school to find their parents missing, when people are detained without access to legal counsel, when all that is happening, the system just isn’t working, and we need to change it”. So basically Obama wants to make a change. He says; "For decades, American citizens and legal permanent residents have been able to sponsor their family members for entry into our country. For decades, American businesses have been able to sponsor valued employees. “The bill before us changes a policy that, while imperfect, has worked well and will replace it with a new, untested, unexamined system to provide visas to immigrants who look good on paper, but who may not have any familial or economic ties to our country.

Joe Biden says; “We want to increase the number of legal immigrants to keep families together”. He also says; we want to meet the demands for jobs, certain employers cannot fill”. As far as big problems go, they are, the immigration bureaucracy is broken and overwhelmed, forcing legal immigrants to wait years for applications and despite a sevenfold increase in recent years, immigration raids only netted 3,600 arrests in 2006 and have placed all the burdens of a broken system onto immigrant families. So Obama has ideas for changes and wants them to happen. He wants to make economic change in mexico, so it can help illegal immigration.

Like Mario i was also born here so i dont have a big problem with this issue. But my parents were both born in India and came here in the early eighties. They had to struggle to earn there living. My mom stayed home and took care of my brother and I. My dad worked in the fields in California when he got here for $3.25 a day. So i see how hard it can be for immigrants to live here. In my opinion, i think immigrants should be allowed in the U.S. but they dont get to have social security. If you come here with a visa and come the way your suppose to, then you should be able to get social security.

I dont have a problem with the issue because I was born here, but my best friend, who I've known since we were four, is an immigrant and he has lived here all his life. I barely found out and I see how he struggles to get a job and go to school. This is a hard issue to deal with because there are people that want better lives and thats why they come, but there are those who take advantage and I dont respect those immigrants. On the other hand we also have to worry about those who were already here because now we are providing help for those immigrants with like WIC and foodstamps when we could be helping out our own citizens instead. We need a good plan on what to do with those who want to come here for work or a better life. For those many that are already here, well we need to find them and get them legalized.

Immigration is such a big big big big problem that I think needs to be solved now! I really liked what Obama said about deporting being so ridiculous. what's the point of deporting immigrants! they are not weird bugs.. we should stop thinking and let racism or whatever it is to a side and undertand that everyone are equal and we should help each other. I dont want to sound cheesy or anything but thats true. I hope that the immigration problem gets solved already and we can finally leave in peace and let the people, the immigrants, to keep working as they are doing today and let them be with their kids since sometimes the kids are US citizens... isnt't horrible the kids that have to live without their parents? just imagine like obama said... the kids going home after school and the kids not finding their parents at home! that just give me chills. most of the immigrants just want to succeed and get their money in a honest way so why to take them away and get them away from this country like weird animals?

As we know there are a lot of people or let me say Mexicans that are here in the United States legal but also at the same time we have those that are ilegal. In my situation i had one of my causin that got married to a men that didnt have any status legal here. Not because he is my causin i am going to say this but because it is the truth as the moment that he came to live over here was just to work and help supporting his family at Mexico. I think that people with this type of situation shouls deserve a chance and have there status fix so that they could be here legal. Know regarding to those that come here illegal and just pretend to be working but the only thing they doing are bad things should be send back from were they came from.

I am a hispanic woman, and i was born in the U.S so i do not have any problems, yet i see the mexicans that were born from mexico and come to america to try and better their lives but cannot because of the immigration issue. I also believe the ones making trouble should not be legalized to stay in america, only the ones who have lived here for so long, have jobs, families, and live as normal people should be able to stay. America is a country of freedom and opportunity, we should let Obama handle this issue because he understands. This topic is a real touchy subject because many people have lost their best friends, relatives, or girlfriend/boyfriends to immigration.

Like his view that American troops conduct air raids and kill civialians in Afghanistan, part of this view also is obsurd. ICE just doesn't conduct a raid to deport illegal immmigrants. ICE conduct raids on illegal immigrants that are suspected of breaking US federal laws; drug traficcing, human traficcing, weapons deals, kidnapping, etc.... I will say he is right, we can't just deport the millions that are already here. But we have to do something because the number of illegal immigrants continues to rise thus increasing the number of people in our nation which causes our nations resources to start becoming depleated.

On my case I think it is not fair, because certain immigrants want to come to America to be free. I have a friend that was born in Mexico, but she came to America when she was four. She still doesn’t have papers and cannot work anywhere. She does have a good family and they live right and legal but there is nothing she can do. I just wish she was able to be here legal, because she does the right thing and never breaks any rules. She also wants to feel free and be able to do things without having to worry bout anyone telling her anything. So I feel for other people as well. I was born in San Antonio so I don’t have that problem, but I guess since my best friend does, I see it and do not like it. Also Obama says; “With the driver’s license issue it is not a problem because immigrants do not come here to drive, they come here to work, so if they paid a fine and learned English then maybe we wouldn’t have a problem of undocumented workers”. Sometimes I do see immigrants that take advantage of being here because they do bad stuff and do not follow the rules. They should be the ones that are not able to come here and be legal. Families should be legalized to come to America to have a better life for themselves. There should maybe be a strict rule to get immigrants legalized just to make sure they are coming to have a better life and not do the wrong things. I have seen bad immigrants that hurt people or break the law. The good ones should not have to suffer for their mistakes. I guess that the two main points are working and keeping families together. Keeping families together is the right thing and more workers can help our economy. Some immigrants are very hard workers and that is what we need. I know Obama is going to fight this, the best way he can and I hope it turns out well and helps our country.
