Health care is a major issue for the American people. What will happen to my generation when we are in our 60’s and 70’s? How will the government help us pay for our doctor or hospital bills? After doing some research on the issue of health care funds, I’ve came to the conclusion that our generation is in for a major shock. Now is the time to be concerned in what the government spends money on. “The Bush administration, already accused by veterans groups of seeking inadequate funds for health care next year, acknowledged yesterday that it is short $1 billion for covering current needs at the Department of Veterans Affairs this year,” states Thomas B. Edsall (Washington Post, 2005; A29). Where did all the money go? This is one of the many problems dealing with inadequate funds in our heath care system. Some of the issues can range from not being able to afford or fix hearing aids to not enough money for a heart transplant for the elderly and sick. Did you know that an undated publication from the Federal Trade Commission and the National Association of Attorneys General states that, “More than 24 million Americans have some type of hearing impartment.” (Consumer issue in Health Care, 559-560)
What can Democratic State Senator John Cornyn do about it? Cornyn is currently running for re-election for the senator seat in the national congress. Growing up in Houston gives him an advantage for re-election in Texas. Considering that he was not only born in Houston, Texas but graduated from Trinity University with a B.A. (Bachelors of Arts) in 1973, a J.D. (Juris Doctor) from St. Mary’s Law School in 1977, as well as a LL.M. (Masters of Laws) from the University of Virginia. (Almanac, 2005, 228-229). Millions of Americans are currently living without medical insurance. It is estimated that over 46 million Americans are uninsured. (2007 NOEDb). New viruses and other illnesses are being found daily. Why aren’t the American people getting help? Some say that medical insurance is a waste of money. Insurance companies charge high premiums but are slow to pay out benefits or refuse payment of benefits.
